Olympus Tough-8000 – Review

After I have reported the most rugged µ tough recently about the launch models from Olympus , I put to MP now even the 8000 model with 12 me. Via Amazon.de I have received, the camera, with the cheaper Luxembourg fairy tax of 15% for 332,39 euro.

The Olympus µ tough-8000 properties is characterized mainly by its outdoor:

  • Waterproof up to 10 m depth in accordance with IPX8 standard (protection against continuous immersion)
  • Shatter-proof up to 100 kg or shockproof from up to 2 m height
  • Frost proof up to-10 ° C
  • Dual IS (mechanical image stabilization combined with high ISO) against camera shake
  • TAP control menu for easy operation even with gloves
  • HyperCrystal III LCD for best viewing even in direct sunlight
  • Integrated pressure gauge for easy checking of air and water pressure directly on the LCD
  • LED illuminator to lighten by underwater or macro scenes

The camera makes a really significant and robust impression already when unpacking, according to A2zCameraBlog. The material of the housing (a metal and plastic mix) feels very high quality, and the dimensions are amazingly compact, considering the tough 8000 but is as resistant. The buttons have failed it unfortunately also quite small. With thicker gloves that could be quite tricky. Luckily there is the (somewhat needy to habituation) TAP control function, which allows the operation by tapping the housing.

The scope of supply (see photo) includes camera, a lithium-ion battery, a USB cable, an audio/video cable, a battery charger, strap, microSD adapter, and operating instructions and software on CD in addition to the. The battery can be charged only in the camera itself, it is not a charger for an external charging included. This is only available as expensive accessories. For this, you can load the battery but both the the charging cable to the socket and the USB cable. Transfer the photos to your PC, the battery is charged automatically.

The first practice test I took with the camera on the weekend to the Cache Event . This, I had to realize that the lens is quite close attached at the right edge of the housing, so now is when multiple photos my finger in the left upper corner to see. I have to watch something better in the future as I keep the camera at the Knippsen. Otherwise the tough-8000 is quickly ready for operation after switching on and the 3 x optical zoom responds quickly. The dimensions and the weight of 204 g (including battery and memory card) are quite Pocket-ready (as opposed to my old Canon PowerShot A80 with good 375 g).

As it stands now to the advertised rugged outdoor properties, so I would not really test the durability as well as the shock 🙂 The underwater test must wait yet also something. As I have seen in various Internet videos, the seal seems to be probably guaranteed.

Conclusion

+ Stand up to even the toughest conditions
+ Handy and easy
+ Quickly ready for use
+ Good display
+ Adapter for the cheap microSD memory cards in the scope of delivery included
– Somewhat ill-placed lens
– xD Picture memory card: expensive, max. 2 GB required for panoramic shots
– No separate charger for the battery pack included (virtually, if you have 2 batteries)

The Olympus µ tough-8000 is the perfect outdoor camera. Currently, there’s no other model that shows such excellent properties. It takes care to keep his fingers not in front of the lens, good pictures succeed one even in the most extreme situation. I can only recommend the tough-8000.

New, you can buy the tough-8000, inter alia at Amazon for Less than 340 euro.
